在古人的观察和界定中，“暑”并不只是单纯地表示炎热。“热”字侧重于干燥炎热，“暑”更侧重指的是既潮湿又炎热。

Today comes the Major Heat (Dashu in Chinese), the outro of summer, which marks the arrival of the hottest time of the year. The Major Heat usually corresponds to Zhongfu, the second of the three ten-day periods of Sanfu, and the weather this period is intolerable hot.
In the observations and definitions of the ancients, the character “暑” (shu) did not simply refer to torridity. The character “热” (re) emphasized dryness and heat, while “暑” (shu) referred more to being both humid and hot.

对于农业而言，大暑前后是至关重要的一个时段。大暑距离立秋不久，同时具有充足的日照和丰沛的降水，此时，正适宜庄稼铆足了劲吸收阳光雨露，旺盛生长，结出饱满的果实。

3习俗
在这样湿热的天气下，自然要顺应天时，避暑纳凉。人们将每年最热的一段时间称作“三伏”，即初伏、中伏和末伏，中伏之始就在大暑之后。此时，人们通过各种方式消暑，如将瓜与桃浸入清凉的泉水中，夜晚观星纳凉，享受夏日的惬意。
Custom
On such hot and humid days, it is natural to conform to the weather and relax in cool places. People refer to the hottest period of the year as “Sanfu” (China’s dog days of summer), which includes Chufu, Zhongfu and Mofu (the first, second and last of the three ten-day periods of Sanfu). The beginning of Zhongfu is after the arrival of the Major Heat. At this time, people relieve the summer heat in various ways, such as soaking melons and peaches in cool spring water before eating, watching the stars at night to enjoy the pleasure of summer.

蒙山此时绿意层层叠叠，是夏日避暑的好去处。夏日的九龙潭瀑布高挂，白色的水帘奔涌而下，为人们带来一丝清凉。
